Clint Holmes & Friends @ SUNCOAST Casino
August 8th, 2008 by Tanya in Reviews

Clint Holmes should be introduced as a the scat-man with the motto of “slap me some skin” per the vocal jazz improvised melodies and rhythms that create this one of a kind talent. On August 2nd we had the opportunity to become part of Clint’s musical talents and vision during his performance at the Suncoast Casino. He was performing in the Suncoast Showroom. The seating was dinner style with comfortable chairs and enough room to place your drink on the table, but a word of warning since there is three tiers of seating, the one area closest to the stage had the attention of the cocktail waitresses. We were in the second tier and were not asked if we would like a drink, so if you want attention then make sure you pay to be in the closest tier. The benefit was also that Clint Holmes came down and slapped some skin with audience members, so probably worth the price.

As for the casino, the Suncoast is a friendly hotel and casino with and elegant look. It is very accommodating and a local favorite. It is an intimate environment that welcomes all different types of people with a very personable staff which is a huge benefit for those looking for a little pampering. This Vegas hotel has 388 deluxe guest rooms at 550 square feet and 39 lavish guest suites ranging from 1100 to 2300 square feet, In fact, with the entire 10th floor of the hotel tower containing only guest suites. All rooms have full-length windows that offer breathtaking views of the surrounding vistas. It is close enough to the strip to enjoy all the amenities, but is further away to really take in the Las Vegas beauty and scenery of the Red Rock Canyon.

As part of the audience, it was a pleasure to hear Clint’s stories of his childhood which explains his love of music. His father was an African-American jazz musician and his mother was a British opera singer. One of the best parts of the show was when his sister came on stage and they sang a song about growing up together and being envious of each other. She was left out on those Sundays with his dad even though she is a very impressive woman who has spent many years singing in the Navy. What a great insight into the connection between these two very talented siblings. In honor of his fondest memories, he scatted one of the most impressive songs of the night which means he used his vocal cords to imitate the sounds of the instruments onstage. I was awestruck at his ability to imitate the instruments with just his voice. He learned on those Sunday jams how to slap some skin, talk some jive, act cool, as any young boy could be at the Rendezvous Jazz Club.

Another really cool part of the act was when Dominick Allen who was the former lead singer of Foreigner came out for a jam session. He played the clarinet like a mad man. They decided to play some Frank Sinatra, but began with Benny Goodman which was jammin’ and slammin’ and who could hit those high notes. They did some scat-singing together and I could swear “I’ve Got Rhythm, I’ve rhyme, Who could ask for anything more” was a Saturday session Clint’s dad would be proud of. Two very talented men working their magic together to make sounds we loved to listen to so what an impressive combination

As for the Clint Holmes I now know, I am impressed with this passion and dream of being on Broadway. With each song, he would explain the meaning behind and his inspiration behind the lyrics. In his humble way, he acknowledged each band member including Davy Nathan who wrote and produced many of the songs on his newest album “Simple Song.” He, of course, sang the song that made him famous called “Playground In My Mind,” but it was his newest songs “Conundrum,” “Gratitude,” and “A Simple Song” that had the audience mesmerized.

If you are wondering where he will be next, he will be working with the Bailey Theater in the University Nevada Las Vegas striving to make his dream come true of creating his own Broadway show a reality called “Just Another Man” on the 14th-16th of August. His goal is to have his theater piece on Broadway so let’s all check it out and support this one of a kind man whose vocal abilities is almost a lost art.
