Galatians Study: Chapter 5 part 1-Christian Liberty/Freedom in Christ

 Galatians Chapter 5 Part 1

We the People = Basic Rights

-Lordship of Freedoms & Liberties = Christ

-Liberty by which Christ has made us free

-remove yourself from bondage

***Therefore is a connector word

-Freedom birthed at site of Calvary

Free From:

-Penalty of sin

-God’s wrath

-Condemnation

-Curse of the law

-Man’s expectations

***How is my conscience judged by another man’s own conscience?

Freed to:

-new Spirit’s power

-his inheritance

VS. 2

-Yoke of bondage is futile

-Yoke leads back to bondage

-Yoke leads to earning God’s favor by works

-Yoke adds requirements to salvation

-Yoke of good deeds adds to bondage

Judaizers: False teachers

-tried to teach that Gentiles must be circumcised to become Jews to become true Christians (steps that add to faith in grace-ritualistic law went against Jesus’ freedom from man’s laws to earn salvation not freedom in faith by grace paid by Christ’s death on the cross-Jesus stated it is finished, it is done!

Paul: If you are going to say obey this one law then you must be perfect obeying all the laws (earn by doing-not believe of what Jesus did)

-VS. 4: the law alienated us from Christ so on the cross we are sealed by Christ

-Grace fulfilled all laws (we stand in His freedom)

-VS. 5: our hope is in His righteousness

-works are fuel for the flesh

-faith is the fuel of grace

-dictating to others is frivolous

-legalism = pride

-Personal convictions must come from God

Paul speaks directly to the church:

VS. 7: why did you go back to legalism

VS. 8: legalism does not diminish Jesus

VS. 9-10

“A little yeast works through the whole batch of dough.” I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other view. The one who is throwing you into confusion, whoever that may be, will have to pay the penalty.”

-the devil is in the little things, the little sins, that leads to sin infesting your whole life

-weed out false gospels

-Paul preached Jesus over circumcision

**Paul had Timothy circumcised to enable a bridge builder to the Jews to share the gospel (the act was not a replacement of Jesus)

-Judaizers tried to catch Paul and manipulate Timothy’s decision to show all needed to be circumcised to be in good standing with God

-Paul’s words taken out of context

VS. 12

-Paul uses sarcasm: if you bring false doctrine both physical and spiritual then both need to stop

-Paul also tells those Judaizers that it is better for you not to have children if you are going to preach lies

VS. 13-21 Life by the Spirit

-Paul speaks to believers about liberty

-not to use freedom to indulge the flesh

-use freedom to serve one another humbly in love

***Jesus was born under law-surrendered to the law-defeated the law-rose again so you would be freed from the law

-How do you define freedom?

-How does God define freedom?

VS. 14-15

“For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself. "If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.”

-legalism always leads to destruction

-selfish people will always destroy each other

-walking in Christ is always a continuous action

-there will always be a spirit vs flesh battle
